scan-aortic aneurysm screening

This is a scan on the aorta which is the main artery in the body.

In some people, most commonly men over 65, the wall of this artery can become weak leading to what is known as an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). A large aneurysm is a serious condition that may require surgery however, in many cases the aorta is only slightly enlarged and this can be monitored to see if it gets bigger.

Approximately 4% of men in England between the ages of 65-74 have an AAA. You are at higher risk if you have a first degree relative who has or had an AAA, if you smoke or have high blood pressure.

Screening for an AAA is a simple ultrasound scan which measures the aorta. Assessment is also made of the kidneys.
